  3. On the reading " the lottery " by Shirley Jackson there are several short story elements to take into consideration. I chose : Imagery because this is the one that always catch my attention when I am reading, in fact for me this is one of the most important aspects to take into consideration to understand the story itself. In this short story it is seen how imagery have an important role in the reading since the beginning, when it shows to the reader the presence of nature by giving vivid images and colors as follows: " with the fresh warmth of a full - summer day the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green." With this example it is seen how the images of nature picture in the reader the plot it self for example. another example that can be analyzed into imagery is " the metaphor " for example: " the lottery was conducted AS were the square dances." According to this example it is also seen the use of metaphors like " as" which is an implied comparison into two different things; in this case comparing the lottery with square dances. As the reader goes into the reading, it is notorious the uses of the senses and the figurative language that create different images in the reader's mind.

  4. The lottery, short story analysis

When reading short stories, we can notice how different elements are present in the writing. One of these elements is the setting, which is the time and location in which a story takes place. The setting covers or mentions geographical location, time, whether conditions, social conditions, and even the mood. The author uses this element to project a better image to the reader. An example of the setting from "The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, is the following: "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th." That example describes when the story is taking place, time of day, whether, and the social condition the lottery is causing. With this example and explanation, we can determine how the setting contributes to provide better description, image, and interest to the story.

  5. In regards of the settings, that it is related with the place, weather, time of the location where everything takes place. In the lottery, the author describes an small town of around 300 people, and also it says "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers
were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green", there it describes the time and the day and also the weather of the place; the summer is related with happines and liberty. This is only aspect of the many that can we analyze on this story.

  6. When I read this little story, there were some aspects of short story that I really liked them. The first one is the point of view which is related to the narrator. This kind of narrator omniscient is characterized by knowing what is happening around the story, the other characters and what they feeling and thinking. As J.Robinson says in his article Elements for Analyzing Fiction” is not a character in the story. In some ways, this type of narrator is invisible. However, a third person narrator can be used to create a tone. For example, the way the narrator tells the story may create an ominous, matter-of-fact, dreamy, preachy or suspenseful tone “(2006). Around this little story, the reader can notice some examples of this kind of narrator. The following words” The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play. And their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands. According to this example, we realized that narrator knows everything, though she/he doesn´t have participation in the scene directly, how the children feel and the specific movements that they do. Also it helps to the reader that can have a vision over story where there is someone who can guide the story and describe every scene deeply. The second aspects is related to the setting, this aspects is defined how where and how a story take place. The author has a strong sense of the place since he/she describe the place with details and these details help to develop the ideas of the story. In the lottery story, there is a piece of work that defines better this aspects” The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. But in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours”. Here the author describes with details what is happening in the village, the flower and the morning help to understand that the narrator has a good connection with that place. Also it shows us the village is the perfect place to develop this story. But if we would change the place, it probably changes the order and circumstances of the story. The village is the adequate place because of the mount of people who live there. In this manner, we realized that when we read a story like this, there are some important elements hidden into the words are relevant to know.

  7. "The Lottery" (1948) by Shirley Jackson
When I read a short story what calls my attention all the time is the setting. Setting is where the story takes place but also it encompasses physical environment, social environment and time. I love how words can actually take me to places which are far away from where I am or places I would not even imagine they exist.
A good writer must master this characteristic of short stories; they have to be very meticulous. Describing every single part of the place so that readers can imagine and follow the story in their minds is essential.
Time: “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day…” We can remember the day and how it looked like that day, sunny, cloudy, raining or windy and if it was hot or cold…
Physical environment: “The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock;” We can actually imagine the village, the people working, the post office and the bank.
Social environment: Since the social environment encompasses everything related to manners, customs, and social class. “There had been, also, a ritual salute, which the official of the lottery had had to use in addressing each person who came up to draw from the box, but this also had changed with time,…” The narrator is telling us all the things involved in the lottery.
Setting is so important that it can make a short story amazing, the best story ever or not so interesting.

According to the settings, it is related with the Physical environment. In the lottery, the author describes a little bit about the place or the location, a small town and it gives us detail of the amount of people. For example; it says "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; theflowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green", the author describes the time and the date. The author also mentioned something about the social classes, and it is part of the social environment.
