Week 11

For this week:

So, this week we have to deal with cultural studies. Imagine our Intercultural Communication classes....now apply that to liteterature. Basically, cultural criticism aims to bring the attention to how culture shapes not only the way we understand literature, but also the way authors expose cultural aspects in a work of fiction.
"In critiquing the traditional canon, cultural critics avoid privileging one cultural product over another and often examine texts that are largely seen as marginal and unimportant in traditional criticism, such as those connected to various forms of pop culture. Essentially cross-disciplinary, cultural criticism and cultural studies have become important tools in theorizing the emergence and importance of postcolonial and multicultural literatures."
2. Como up with to questions or topics related to culture that could be analysed in The House of Mango Street. Post here on FB.

Infor for quiz

For the quiz. Below you find links to the original poem Follower by Seamus Heaney and a Spanish translation. In a well-developed paragraph, analyze the translation. Does it capture the mood? Are there words you would use differently? Who do you think is the audience for this translation (I mean, is it for a specific geographical location). You can analyze any aspect of the translation you want. You should have at least 10 full sentences in your analysis.

Midterm

It's already that time of year: Midterms! So, for this one, you have to write an analysis of the story The Ring by Isak Dinesen (by the way, she is a woman). I want you to write a 5 paragraph essay with quotations both from the story and from outside sources. Use APA format. Work on a good thesis statement and appropriate topic sentences for each paragraph. I want you to work really hard on writing an almost perfect essay. That it's why it is only a 5 paragraph one. The story can be found below. You have to send the essay as a word document to my email. Good luck!
